This is traditionally made with fresh ripe eating apples, but you may use, fresh or defrosted/canned-drained berries, peaches, pineapple, plums & etc.
Don't use fruit pie filling as it is too thick.
( I actually love it with fresh banana and chocolate chips)
1 stick butter
3 medium ripe eating apples, peeled and cored and cut into rings (1/4 inch)..sprinkle with lemon juice or place in lemon juice and water to prevent going brown.
Drain well just before using.
1/2 cup sugar
3tbsp white wine or apple juice
Egg bread, French white bread, (Whole wheat bread will give a nuttier flavored dessert), potato bread..slightly stale: cut into 1/4 inch slices, remove the crusts and allow to sit out, uncovered for 2 hours before making the dessert.
(don't use toasted bread nor moldy, this has to be made with fresh, just slightly stale bread).
1 1/2 cups single cream/whipping cream
2 large eggs room temp. beaten well
grated rind of orange cut into thin strips (optional and do not use with banana)
Sugar for sprinkling
Grease a deep ovenproof dish ( 5 cup) with some of the butter and melt the rest.
Arrange the apple slices overlapping on the base of the dish.
Sprinkle half the sugar over the apples
Pour the wine over the apples and then a layer of bread slices, pressing down to flatten them slightly.
Whisk the eggs and cream, adding the rest of the sugar and orange peel.
Pour over the bread and apples and allow to soak for 30 mins.
Preheat oven 350F Middle shelf
Pour over the melted butter, sprinkle lightly with sugar and bake for 25 mins or until golden, and set...( may jiggle slightly..it will set as it cools slightly)
Remove from oven and wait 5 mins and then serve with extra cream or custard sauce
If using fruit other than raw fresh apple..allow 14-16 ozs canned-drained or defrosted-drained
the banana-chocolate chip..3-4 large bananas sliced and 12 ozs chocolate chips..place chocolate over the bananas.
Fantastic dessert
