(Old) GREEN IDEAS..lowering one's carbon footprint ..... 100yrs ago

HAPPY EARTH DAY APRIL 22ND 2013

It is hard to imagine how we, as a civilized people, managed without garbage collections in big cities.
It is also hard to realize that we are also paying good money to purchase bags to throw garbage into and then throw away.

Future generations will be awe struck at how we wasted good money clogging up the Earth with plastic bin liners,( which do not break down) not to mention the amount of good food that was lost in them.

In USA 1908 the following is from a book of home management concerning disposal of kitchen garbage
"It is often remarked that the amount of food thrown away by the average American family would support a French or Italian family of equal size and standing".
So the problem of kitchen food waste is not a new one.

Also STOP USING WASTE DISPOSALS..they clutter up the drains and the oceans with grease and crap that is of no use to the wildlife and in some case actually is Harmful.

The solutions are easy, and just take some time to figure out.
The amount of time people spend in the gym...a small portion of that time could be spent being useful to yourself, your neighborhood and to the planet.

Unless you live in a family of 16 or more adults, do not purchase a 10 gallon garbage can.
Buy a 3 x1 gal cans, washable ones, with a tight fitting lids ( not a swing lid)..the idea is to keep smells and insects out. Also makes the job easier if they have  a handy carrying handle.

Purchase from a reg. store you do not need a "designer one", remember this is for garbage!.

if you find yourself short of space, keep the 3 cans outside the kitchen door, but DO empty every night.

REMEMBER YOU ARE EMPTYING THESE EVERY NIGHT REGARDLESS OF HOW FULL THEY ARE.

In can #1..the regular garbage: Place in the can, empty food cans, and anything not recyclable,( also unless you live in an apartment block, do not purchase garbage can liners).
In can #2 place all recyclables newspaper, drink cans, plastic

In can #3 all organic recyclables..dead plants, used tea leaves/tea bags/coffee grounds and any filters, plant food scraps, egg shells.

EVERY NIGHT EMPTY ALL 3 CANS OUT OF THE HOUSE

The organic matter can go in the organic recycle trash can ( garden waste) or make your own compost in your garden..lay the organic trash on bare ground and cover with a layer of soil, and water well. If you have household pets..add a sprinkle of cayenne pepper to the mound of compost and this will keep them and rodents away and continue to do this until pile is 3 ft high then make another, in 6 months the first pile will be OK to put around your plants
The other 2 cans go in the regular trash can and the recycle bottle/can bin or you may be able to find places locally to recycle them yourself and get money back.

ALL THE GARBAGE CANS SHOULD BE WASHED WELL WITH HOT WATER , AND MILD DETERGENT..NO NEED FOR HARSH CHEMICALS AS THEY ARE EMPTIED EVERY NIGHT.

I know a lot of cities and towns in Europe have already adopted this plan and are working to heal the planet.
A "slop bucket" has changed the way the United Kingdom disposes of it's organic recyclables.

As you prepare your meals, keep a large bowl on the kitchen counter for all your food scraps, then empty into the organic waste can...this also helps prevent you pouring them into the landfills..and is a long standing Chef's trick.

Unblocking kitchen sinks:
Blockages are usually a build up of kitchen grease:
Place 8ozs baking soda in a colander or sieve and pour boiling water through it into the drain, wait 20 mins then pour more boiling water through.
if this does not work use 1 pt vinegar and 8ozs baking soda..pour in drain and wait 30 mins..then flush with hot water...Circa 1908

Preventatives against flies/mosquito's circa 1908..they still work today though... Flies hate sweet clover..place bags of this in cheesecloth around the room ( today raid a local park)

Sprinkle the room with oil of sassafras or bay laurel ( bay has been used by butchers in Geneva for generations)

Boil onions or leeks in water, cool then wash picture frames and window frames, molding etc. with a soft cloth moistened with the onion water.

Mosquito's:
Prevent bites :dilute oil of pennyroyal in water or make an infusion (hot water)  and apply to face, hands etc..or rub the skin with any bruised leaves of pennyroyal.

to cure mosquito bites:
apply salt and water &/or add some dried tobacco to the mix, and dab the bite marks.

To get rid of ants:
scatter snuff ( dried tobacco)  on their run ways
OR
branches of sweet fern or fresh green  sage leaves or ground red pepper, or borax on their run ways
